In June 2020 BLM started providing services in communities surrounding the three parks managed by African Parks in Malawi namely Majete, Liwonde and Nkhotakota with the support from an anonymous donor.

Overview

Through partnership with African Parks, BLM has expanded SRHR services through single provider outreach and working with 10 public facilities. The project aims to alleviate pressure on the environment – by reducing encroachment on protected areas leading to human-wildlife conflicts, and supporting women to have choice. Project seeks to lessen pressure on the environment by combining SRHR services with conservation initiatives to reduce unsafe abortions and unmet need for FP.

At least 50% of the population living in the parks, live below poverty line. Furthermore, there is limited livelihood opportunities (outside subsistence agriculture) especially for women in rural areas create barriers for self sufficiency.

The bigger picture

The project aims to strengthen quality and sustainability of trained MoH providers through mentorship at public facilities. It also provides SRHR services to last mile communities through outreach.

Through commercially marketing SRHR products, BLM expands access to high quality SRH commodities and products. This increases product availability, providing trainings and expand SM outlets aimed at enhancing women’s access to SRH services, reducing donor reliance.

This partnership amplifies awareness and evidence regarding SRHR & natural resources conversation synergies.
